Born in Hamburg in 1924 and raised in Berlin, Ruth Schönthal was forced to leave Germany at the age of 14 due to growing hardship and persecution by the National Socialists. She fled with her family, first to Sweden and then to Mexico. Here, during a concert tour, she came to the attention of Paul Hindemith, who helped her obtain a scholarship at Yale University to continue studying composition with him.

Despite all obstacles and difficulties, Ruth Schönthal became a successful composer and professor, but her diverse oeuvre is still little known in her home country of Germany.

In 2024, Ruth Schönthal's music will be heard in a series of events and projects at various venues in Germany and abroad.
