beyond Kunstlied

beyond Kunstlied
pathways to expand the scope of artistic agency and impact as an interpreter and to enhance the vitality of performance
This dissertation project explores the agency and impact that classical performers can develop beyond representation and reproduction. The project draws on a cross-epochal art song repertoire. The focus is on exploring the limits of conventional interpretive practices—those currently taught, rehearsed, and performed—which are considered aesthetically and performatively conformist in the sense of institutional traditions. Artistic experimentation is interwoven with sociological, phenomenological, and historical perspectives. In this way, the emancipatory potential of performing musicians becomes visible—as does a vital space of possibility that lies beyond conformity.
Through critical performance practice, Beyond Kunstlied examines implicit power structures, normative expectations, and the connection between habitus and agency. It emphasizes the interplay between the stage we perform on and the world in which we live. Through performative, collaborative, and communicative interventions, alternative forms of music-making emerge. This results in a shift in priorities: the logic of comparability, perfection, and competition gives way to the cultivation of attention and sensitivity; slow, dialogic learning; imperfect spaces for play and experiments; and care rather than competition.
